Dr. Kimura and Mr. Kumon
Established in 1984 by Dr. Dan Kimura, a professor at Washington University, the Ladue Kumon center was the first Kumon Center in the Midwest. Dr. Kimura learned about the Kumon Method in his hometown Moriguchi, in the suburb of Osaka, Japan, where Mr. Tohru Kumon started the Method in 1955. In his Opening Remarks given at the 4th Midwest Kumon Instructors Conference, Dr. Kimura describes his first encounter with the Kumon Method.

Dr. Kimura and Mr. Annaka,
President of Kumon
Both Mr. Kumon and Dr. Kimura graduated from Osaka University.

Dr. and Mrs. Kimura introduced the Kumon Method to St. Louis in 1984 for their two sons, 5th and 6th graders at the time, to learn school math.

In this picture, taken during the meeting in 1993 at the Kumon Headquarters in Osaka, Dr. Kimura shows Mr. Kumon the 1992 Post-Dispatch article about the first Kumon Center in St. Louis and how it was started.
